The Road to the Football Final at Brazil 2016

August 17, 2016

As expected, the top two favourites of the football tournament in Rio de Janeiro have made it through the preliminary round and now they have the final game in close sight. They need to overcome one last hurdle to book a place in the final showdown. Both Germany and the hosts Brazil weren’t too convincing in the group stages, both bagging five points from a maximum of nine. Although five points were enough for Brazil to secure a top place finish in Group A, Germany finished second to South Korea and a point away from third place finishers Mexico. The Germans just about made it, but tactical changes were imminent if they wanted to hang around in Brazil.

The quarter finals were up next and Brazil looked comfortable with a solid 2-0 win over neighbours Colombia. Neymar broke the deadlock and in the early stages of the first half and Luan put the final nail in the coffin in the 83rd minute to eliminate the Colombians. Neymar and Co. now face Germany, who struggled in the preliminary round but then steamrolled over Portugal with a 4-0 win. It took a while for Germany to find a net, 45 minutes to be exact but once they opened the score, Portugal put more men forward and goals started pouring in by the German side.

Nigeria finished first in Group B with six points and produced another solid performance against Denmark in the quarter finals. It was two to the good and Nigeria now face Germany in a fight for a spot in the final. Nigeria are the underdogs in their semi-final game against Germany, with odds currently at 13/4.

South Korea performed well throughout the tournament and even managed to secure a first place finish of Group C. A hard fought match ensued against Honduras, but Alberto Elis’s goal was enough to sink the South Koreans. Honduras are the underdogs against hosts Brazil, with odds currently at 11/1 for them to win the game. Brazil’s current odds stand at 27/100.

Previous tournament winners Mexico underperformed in the group stages and as a result, they were sent home early. Many football betting fans had high expectations for Mexico, but a measly win and an unsatisfactory draw weren’t enough to see them through.
