Handball is a sport with a long history and it will come as no surprise to lovers of the game that the first World Championships were held way back in 1938. Following the outbreak of the Second World War, the tournament resumed in 1954 and it’s been a permanent fixture on the calendar ever since.
At Unibet, our handball markets are always busy but the interest is set to intensify whenever the world champions appear on the horizon. Before you join in, please read on.
In the present day, the men’s handball world championship is scheduled to be held on a bi-annual basis in odd-numbered years. The current format allows for 24 national teams to take part and those sides come from five handball federations.
The competition starts with a Preliminary Round where all 24 teams are placed into four groups of six. They will play each other once and, at the end of that sequence, the top three sides in each section will progress to the main round.
A further group stage follows to determine who will progress to the semi finals and, following the two semis, we have our finalists. Play off matches are also included to decide the minor places, down to 24th position, and the whole schedule involves no fewer than 96 games.
Betting for many of our customers starts with the overall winner of the Handball World Championship. These markets will appear ahead of the event and that allows for time to consider the strengths and weaknesses of the qualified teams.
Match betting takes over after the draw is made and, along with the moneyline picks for all 96 games, there will be a good selection of prop bets including Total Goals, Handicaps and the final winning margin.
