Bet on Darts: European Darts Trophy betting

October 12, 2017

Bet on the European Darts Trophy this week as Michael van Gerwen looks to recover from his shock defeat last week with victory in here in Göttingen.

Darts betting fans were left stunned by Van Gerwen’s Unibet World Grand Prix exit earlier this month and pressure is mounting on the Dutchman to get back to his best.

He faces a stellar lineup in Germany, however, with Peter Wright, Michael Smith and Simon Whitlock all competing.

And there’s the Unibet World Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney to contend with on the oche!

The European Darts Trophy takes place between 13 and 15 October, with the PDC’s ranked stars entering in the second round. Here are the best darts betting tips for the tournament…

Bet on Michael van Gerwen

For the first time in almost two years, Van Gerwen is suffering what some fans believe is a blip in form. Granted, he has taken time out for the birth of his child over the summer but the Dutchman was expected to return with a bang. That hasn’t happened.

Van Gerwen’s last tournament win was a month ago at the German Darts Grand Prix. Since then he’s lost in the Unibet Champions League of Darts, two Players Championship Ireland events and the Unibet World Grand Prix. Van Gerwen heads into the European Darts Trophy in desperate search of a win.

Can Van Gerwen win the European Darts Trophy? He’s certainly the favourite with the Unibet odds setters as much as he is with the fans! But his form has dipped and this is one of the most competitive European Tour tournaments to date this season.

European Darts Trophy bets

Peter Wright

Other good bets for the European Darts Trophy are to back in in-form guys. Peter Wright has endured a few disappointing outings in recent weeks but he’s biggest successes this season have come on the European Tour.

Wright has won five of these 12 European events, the same as Van Gerwen. The Scot won the International Darts Open in Riesa last month, beating Kim Huybrechts 6-5 in the final. Twice has Wright beaten Van Gerwen in European finals this year — and he boasts a 100 per cent record when he gets to the last match.

Simon Whitlock

Whitlock gave his stock a huge boost last week when reaching the Unibet World Grand Prix final. For the Australian, it was his first final since winning the Players Championship Barnsley 4 way back in March. He’s only reached one semi-final since then also — the Melbourne Masters.

On Saturday Whitlock took a two-set lead against Gurney in the Unibet World Grand Prix only to be ousted by the Northern Irishman. Whitlock is another good bet to reach the European Darts Trophy final this week… but he may not win it.

Daryl Gurney

Darts needs new characters and Daryl Gurney certainly fits this remit. The Unibet World Grand Prix was his first major PDC title and sets him up as one of the contenders for the World Championship. Gurney must strike while the iron is hot and rack up tournament wins now. The European Darts Trophy is the perfect contest for him to flex his new-found muscles. The European Tour hasn’t been kind to him this year but Gurney is now expected to perform.

Mesur Suljovic

Suljovic was one of the outsiders to win the Unibet World Grand Prix but suffered the shock defeat to Whitlock in the semi-finals. The Austrian is yet to win a European title this season, despite reaching two finals. That is a shame considering last year he won the International Darts Open in Riesa.

Nevertheless, Suljovic is usually worth backing when betting on live darts because while he is unlikely to win a tournament he should progress to the semi-finals. Suljovic clinched the Unibet Champions League title last month and can take anyone on the oche on his day. He should maybe be avoided if you’re seeking a European Darts Trophy winner or finalist. But consider Suljovic a safe in-play bet in the early rounds.
