Prof. Robert Furlongsworth’s Saturday Racing June 12 Eagle Farm Preview: Stradbroke’s Graveyard For Favourites

Racecourse
Eagle Farm, Brisbane

Race 8
Stradbroke Handicap, 1400m

The Brisbane winter carnival reaches its crescendo this weekend with this time-honoured event the second of two feature Group 1 races.
Vega One (7.00) (pictured above and in below tweet) heads the market after a memorable win in the Kingsford-Smith Cup a fortnight ago, the bay the beneficiary of a gem of a ride from Jamie Kah who weaved a passage through the field and watched him explode in the final 100m to get the chocolates.
Beaten less than a length by Tyzone here 12 months ago, he’s drawn towards the rails with trainer Tony Gollan flagging the likelihood that he will be ridden a bit closer on Saturday having had to come from last on that occasion.
Counting against him is the awful recent record of favourites with the race proving to be something of a graveyard for fancied runners outside of Trekking’s win in 2019.
Have long been a fan of this horse and while Kah is replaced in the saddle by Rachel King, remain confident that he will run a big race.

Topweight Mr Quickie (9.50) (in below tweet) won the Queensland Derby as a 3YO on his only previous visit to Eagle Farm but has proven to be more effective over shorter trips as his career has progressed.
Freshened after a successful autumn preparation in Melbourne, he should get his preferred firm ground but the inside draw presents as a possible hindrance and he will be reliant on some luck in running.

Wild Planet (7.00) has had a month between runs having chased home Eduardo in the 10,000 with Team Hawkes hopeful that the decision to bypass the Kingsford-Smith will have him cherry ripe for this.
He beat Vega One home there which has likely influenced his price but he’s generally underwhelmed at the highest level and was prepared to look beyond.
The lone 3YO entrant, Apache Chase (12.00), is racing in great form and led from barrier to box in the Fred Best Classic to earn his spot, upstaging the highly touted Ayrton in the process.
He’s unbeaten at four cracks over this course and distance but won’t get an easy time in front here and feel the intensity of the race may find him out a bit late.
Outside draws have not proven to be a blocker in this race over the past few decades and there’s a couple who caught the eye further down the list in that category.
Goodwood winner Savatoxl (26.00) (pictured below) wasn’t beaten all that far last start and gets a handy weight drop into this while Niccanova (15.00) flashed home for third in similar circumstances last year and his preparation has been built around this race.

The other horse who has been somewhat overlooked is I Am Superman (21.00), who disappointed at WFA level in the All Aged but has been freshened since, ran a nice-looking trial and draws to get an economical run forward of midfield.

My Tips: 1 – Vega One (7.00), 2 – Mr Quickie (9.50), 3 – Savatoxl (267.00)

Race 7
JJ Atkins Stakes, 1600m

Earlier, the 2YO division takes centre stage with most of the leading contenders here coming out of the BRC Sires Produce.
Tiger Of Malay (7.50) (in above tweet) was a deserved winner there but it wasn’t hard to miss the runs of both Port Louis (5.00) and Converge (3.00) as they rattled home from deep positions to get within a length of length of the Freedman colt.
Will be interesting to see the tactics adopted aboard Converge given the low draw and his earlier penchant for racing on-speed but getting out to a mile this race looks to set up pretty well for Port Louis (pictured below) to break his maiden tag at the highest level.
Of the others, Cape Breton (16.00) is amongst the least experienced horses in the field and is thrown in the deep end after a tenacious win at Rosehill last weekend.
He’s still learning his craft but the camp seem confident he will get a mile and he looks a lively outsider, with the Waller stable also to be represented by Giannis (18.00).

My Tip: Port Louis (5.00) (win)
