“Australia’s only Group 1 race run at WFA over a mile-and-a-half has attracted a handy field.”

Racecourse
Newcastle, Sydney

Race 5
Tancred Stakes, 2400m

Australia’s only Group 1 race run at WFA over a mile-and-a-half has attracted a handy field and presents somewhat of a rematch from the Australian Cup with the trifecta all engaged.
A return to firmer ground proved the tonic for Duais (2.70) (in below tweet) with the Queensland Oaks winner exploding at the furlong mark to put a space on Think It Over (6.00) and the tiring Spanish Mission (4.60).

Trainer Edward Cummings was delighted with her effort and Monday’s race at Newcastle will indicate which path his charge follows into the Championships, with the option to drop back in trip into what shapes as a star-studded Queen Elizabeth or stretch out to the two miles of the Sydney Cup with one eye on the spring.
Second to Hungry Heart in last year’s Oaks, she’ll have no dramas getting the trip but the forecast is more of a concern with heavy rain predicted over the coming days and the track likely to deteriorate from its current Soft7 rating.
That’s enough to put me off at quotes around the 2.70 mark.
Think It Over (in below tweet) was far from disgraced at Flemington and will enjoy getting back to NSW where he has had plenty of success over the past couple of seasons.
He’s another horse who struggles to produce his best on rain-affected surfaces, although it must be said he coped adequately with the Heavy10 in the Chipping Norton when beaten barely more than a length.
With a few doubts around those at the pointy end of the market the suggested play is to keep it small and go a bit wider in price with several runners at double figure odds not without a hope.

She’s Ideel (8.00) (in below video) didn’t come into the Australian Cup at all but her run in the Chipping Norton was a ripper and she ran second to Sir Dragonet in this race 12 months ago.
Stockman (13.00) lacks the class of a few of these but goes great in the wet and has little to lose with the Sydney Cup on his agenda in a couple of weeks.
Fair to say that Australian audiences haven’t seen the best of The Chosen One (12.00) with the Kiwi galloper victorious in just 3 of his 25 starts on this side of the Tasman but he has been racing well in the Group 1 features at home and isn’t the worst here.

My Tip: She’s Ideel (8.00, 2.35) (each way)

“She’s proven in the conditions and will give this a shake.”

Later, the card’s other Group 1 is for the 3YO fillies with visiting Gypsy Goddess (4.40) (in below tweet) set to put her unbeaten record on the line against the best of the locals.
The bay has swept all before her in her home state through five career starts, a sequence that included a resounding win over this trip in the Grand Prix Stakes just prior to Christmas.
With the Australian Oaks her ultimate target this campaign, she had one run in Brisbane prior to heading south, with trainer David Vandyke thrilled with what she was able to produce at Eagle Farm with just a soft trial under her belt.
However, while some of her wins have looked visually impressive there’s a case to be made that she hasn’t beaten much at all and keen to be against her here.

Hinged (3.50) (in below tweet) is chasing a second ‘major’ of the preparation having held off Startantes in a desperately tight finish to the Surround Stakes late last month.
While she was beaten into third place in the Coolmore Classic she gave them a healthy start and was doing her best work late.
She’s proven in the conditions and will give this a shake.

Stablemate Fangirl (8.00) was a somewhat forgive effort in the Phar Lap Stakes with Tommy Berry reporting that his mount was unsuited by the slow-to-moderate pace in the middle stages which turned the event into a sprint home and played into the hands of leader Mr Mozart
While the step out to 2000m looks suitable just feel she is a better horse on top of the ground and may fall a bit short here.
Never Been Kissed (10.00) comes out of the same race where she put in a vastly improved performance having had somewhat of a gut-buster first-up where her conditioning really gave out over the final furlong.
Her last crack at the 2000m saw her finish second to Profondo in last year’s Spring Champion Stakes which gives cause for optimism that she can measure up here.

My Tip: Hinged (3.50) (win)
