How Social Media Reacted To Twilight Payment Winning The 2020 Melbourne Cup

November 3, 2020April 26th, 2022

The iconic Melbourne Cup might not be richest race in Australian racing but there’s little doubt it’s the people’s race and the race that stops a nation.
Billed as the world's greatest staying race, the winning horse forever etches their name in Australian racing history and this year it was Irish raider Twilight Payment (pictured above) who led all the way to salute in the coveted 3200m race for the first time.

This year’s race attracted another stellar field of premier stayers from home and abroad with Aidan O’Brien’s Tiger Moth, who finished second, starting as the 6.50 favourite with Unibet.
After rounding the final turn, the 23-horse field galloped down the Flemington at a furious pace but race leader Twilight Payment couldn’t be denied, hitting the line first ahead of Tiger Moth in second and Prince Of Arran in third.
It was owner Lloyd Williams' 7th Melbourne Cup, trainer Joseph O'Brien's second Cup and jockey Jye McNeil's maiden Melbourne Cup in his first ride in the famous race.

Unibet ambassador and champion trainer Ciaron Maher saddled up three runners in the race including longshot Etah James, Persan and Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet.
After his euphoric Cox Plate triumph, the Dragon was understandably in a relaxed mood in the lead-up to the great race.

Leading female jockey Jamie Kah went into her first Melbourne Cup on the well-backed Prince Of Arran and was looking to become just the second female jockey to win the Cup.
Kah and third-placed Prince Of Arran jumped from the same barrier which Michelle Payne and Prince Of Penzance jumped from in their historic Cup triumph in 2015.
Caulfield Cup winner Verry Elleegant also went into the race chasing history with the Chris Waller mare aiming to become the first horse since 2001 to capture the Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double.
The pre-race national anthem was performed by The Masked Singer winner and Neighbours star Bonnie Anderson.

Earlier in the day in the virtual Race Of Dreams, it was former Cup champion Makybe Diva, who took out the race in a frenetic finish.
