World Matchplay Darts Betting: Van Gerwen favourite
The 2017 World Matchplay Darts is one of the biggest events on the calendar and Unibet darts betting fans are already siding with their favourites.
The World Matchplay Darts is a week-long tournament in Blackpool celebrating the very best of long-form knockout darts.
Michael van Gerwen is the favourite to win the tournament but starts in the first round like everyone else. He must get past Steve Bunting in the first match and will then face three more opponents if he wants to make the best-of-35-legs final.
Bet on the World Matchplay Darts: Quarter-final betting
Unibet is covering the entire World Matchplay Darts, including markets on every match, quarter and overall tournament winner. The tournament kicks off on 22 July, finishing on 30 July.
That gives darts betting fans nine whole days of arrows action! There are 32 players in the tournament, of which 16 are seeded. The top four seeds — Van Gerwen, Peter Wright, Gary Anderson and Adrian Lewis — are split into individual quarters of the draw until potentially meeting at the semi-final stage.
It is therefore a good idea to bet on quarters in the World Matchplay Darts. Van Gerwen is 1.29 to win his quarter — the top one, of course! — but Phil Taylor is also in that end of the draw. Would you bank on Van Gerwen to beat Taylor in the quarter-finals? Yes, probably. But not at 1.29. Those odds are terrible and not worth backing.
Instead, it’s worth backing the two Scots to reach the semi-finals and you could merge them together in a combination bet to boost those odds. Anderson is 1.53 to win his quarter, in which his main challenger Mensur Suljovic has hit a bad patch in recent weeks. Wright, meanwhile, is 1.57 to win his quarter and will likely fast Michael Smith in the last-eight — a routine win.
Bet €10 on Anderson and Wright combined to reach the semi-finals for a potential €24 payout.
Bet on Michael van Gerwen
Of course, Van Gerwen remains the favourite at the World Matchplay Darts and he is 1.61 to win the whole tournament. Those may be slim odds but Van Gerwen is at the top of his game right now. One blip on the European Tour is the only blemish on his record since winning the Premier League of Darts.
If you think Van Gerwen will win the World Matchplay Darts then back him now, as his odds are only going to drop.
Live darts betting tips
Unibet has markets for every match of the World Matchplay Darts and some first-round ties immediately catch the eye. Spaniard Cristo Reyes beat Robert Thornton for the first time in his career last October and is a smart bet at good odds (1.77) to claim another victory.
Mensur Suljovic (1.22) should have no problem against John Henderson, while Phil Taylor at 1.33 to beat Gerwyn Price is a good start to your darts betting week.
Do avoid Raymond van Barneveld, however. The Dutchman’s inconsistencies are a darts punter’s nightmare. He is 1.33 to beat Joe Cullen, but at 3.40 Cullen is a great shout.
As for Van Gerwen, add his 1.03 to beat Stephen Bunting (12.00) onto any combination bet just to bump up the numbers a little bit more!
