World Cup Betting — Top assist makers

January 19, 2018

Betting on assists in football opens up a world of possibilities and finding the providers when World Cup betting will be no different this summer!

Assist makers form the heart of any attacking side. They’re selfless and always willing to feed the greedy strikers.

Betting on assists is a great way to bet on the World Cup, especially if you’re stuck on who will win the Golden Boot this year.

There are loads of playmakers who don’t always get the credit they deserve because they’re not the ones on the scoresheet.

But they are vital components to any team. Just look at the Premier League this season, where Manchester City have three of the top assist makers in England! It goes to show an attacking unit is greater than individual talents.

So, who will be the top assist maker at the World Cup this summer? Let’s take a look at the main candidates.

World Cup assist betting

Neymar 10/1

Copa America Brazil Neymar

This is perhaps a surprising choice for the favourite assist maker at the World Cup. Neymar is well known for his goalscoring attributes — but assists? He left Barcelona for Paris SG specifically to be the main man. The one who scores all the goals! But Neymar is worth considering backing here. After all, Brazil have possibly the strongest attacking unit going into the World Cup and Neymar will be obliged to lay the ball off to others some times. Winning a World Cup never comes down to one man and the Brazil captain knows this. Brazil should reach the semi-finals at least, meaning Neymar will likely have six games or more to spread the wealth. He’s not a bad shout at this price.

Antoine Griezmann 11/1

Griezmann is one of the favourites to win the World Cup Golden Boot and a combination bet with top assists isn’t a bad idea. Griezmann, like Neymar, is the kingpin of his team. But, like Brazil, France have a wealth of attacking talent alongside the main striker. France should do well in this tournament, especially after reaching the Euro Football 2016 final. Another progression deep into the knockout stages here will require goals and Griezmann has those in abundance. But he is also a more selfless player than other European centre-forwards. So one can assume he will get an assist or two.

David Silva 12/1

David Silva Man City.jpg

Spain are the kings of creativity and midfield maestro David Silva heads into the World Cup off a fantastic season with Manchester City. He is already one of the top assist makers in the Premier League and was the joint-top assist maker in Euro Football 2012 with three. Spain face Morocco and Iran in the World Cup group stage, so there is the promise of goals here. And progression would likely see them face Uruguay or Russia in the last-16 — two nations hardly known for their defensive supremacy. So Silva is well placed at 12/1.

Mesut Ozil 13/1

Ozil earned three assists at Euro Football 2012 alongside David Silva. But he boasts just one assist in an international tournament since then. Ozil is known as the assist master at Arsenal but this season those provisions have dried up somewhat. Still, football betting experts will argue form is temporary, class is permanent. Is Ozil good enough to top the assist charts at this World Cup? Certainly yes. But that requires him to be the main man for Germany. And that isn’t the case.

Toni Kroos 13/1

This is Germany’s real leader in midfield. Kroos has proven the assist king already. He topped the assist charts in 2014 when shocking the betting community with his four set-ups at the World Cup in Brazil. Kroos is a dependable provider for club side Madrid and is tipped to make this World Cup this own. Germany are one of the favourites for the title and Kroos is primed to be at the forefront of their success. A top tip if ever there was one!

Kevin De Bruyne 15/1

De Bruyne has lit up the Premier League with Manchester City this season — even more so than David Silva. But the problem is Belgium may not go far enough at the World Cup to provide De Bruyne with the games required to challenge for the top assist maker gong. Belgium are in a tricky group with England and, while they are expected to reach the quarter-finals, finishing second in their group means they could meet Poland in the next round. Then it may be a case of playing Brazil or Germany next. And that is where Belgium’s — and De Bruyne’s — World Cup would likely end.

Dele Alli 40/1

It is a sign of just how unconfident England football betting fans are that Dele Alli is their highest-priced player to be the top assist maker at 40/1. Alli is an exceptional talent and alongside Harry Kane has ruled the roost at Tottenham. The Kane-Alli partnership works wonders at club level and there is no reason why that cannot be translated onto the international stage. Kane and Alli laboured at Euro Football 2016 — but so did the rest of the England side. England have games against Algeria and Panama to test their nerve before a final crunch tie with Belgium in Kaliningrad sees out the group. Alli should get in on the action and fans can expect at least one or two assists from the ex-MK Dons gem.
