Premier League Darts Play-Offs Betting: Can anyone stop Michael van Gerwen winni

May 17, 2017

The final of the 2017 Premier League of Darts takes place at London’s O2 Arena on Thursday night and Unibet betting fans are largely predicting a Michael van Gerwen victory.

Van Gerwen has dominated this season to finish the league campaign right at the top. His main challenger Gary Anderson has been off the boil but nevertheless qualifies for the semi-finals.

Van Gerwen and Anderson will clash in the first semi-final on Thursday night before peter Wright and Phil Taylor do battle on the oche.

Then, the match for the Premier League crown and a €291,000 cheque will get underway over 21 scintillating legs.

Here are the best bets for the Premier League of Darts showdown.

Michael van Gerwen v Gary Anderson

Van Gerwen beat Anderson 7-4 last week in Aberdeen and is 1.30 to beat the Scot in their semi-final. Dutchman Van Gerwen lost just twice in 16 matches in the Premier League and took his chances in clinical fashion against Anderson last week. His 103.56 average means Van Gerwen finished the league campaign with a staggering +104 average, the best of all 10 players.

But Anderson does have a chance of stopping Van Gerwen and Unibet darts punters may want to hedge their bets here. For a start, Anderson has been consistent in his averages, finishing the campaign on +102. He drew 6-6 with Van Gerwen in their first meeting of this tournament and is 3.55 to win this match, which is over 19 legs. Anderson also beat Van Gerwen in the PDA Players Championship back in April.

The length of this semi-final could also play into Anderson’s advantage. Van Gerwen has proven fallible when going the distance. His recent record in best-of-11 matches against Anderson reads W3 L2. It shows Anderson can get under Van Gerwen’s skin and, although the former is suspect to losing his legs, he is more than capable of clawing back long-haul matches.

Peter Wright v Phil Taylor

Age is supposedly a factor for veteran Phil Taylor, who is reducing the number of tournaments he plays. However, don’t expect fatigue to be a problem in this semi-final. Taylor beat Wright 10-5 both at the Unibet Masters and the Unibet Champions League of Darts in recent months. These matches suit the experience of the record world champion.

However, experience can only get you so far. Taylor is a class act but Wright is also a mean darts player. In fact, were it not for Anderson, Van Gerwen and Taylor, Wright would have won many more trophies than he currently does.

Wright comes into this semi-final after an excellent campaign, having lost only three of 16 matches. He is on a four-match winning streak that includes a 7-3 victory over Taylor. Wright trumps Taylor the averages, maximums and 140s in the Premier League this season. But his checkout percentage is not as good.

And that is where Taylor will look to hurt Wright, trusting in his ability to find those doubles at just the right time. Taylor is 2.63 to win this semi-final and Wright closer in at 1.50. But the best bet is to back this match to go some distance. It’s not going to be a 10-3 walkover to either man. Bet on +17.5 legs at 2.60.

Premier League Darts Final

Van Gerwen is 1.53 to win the Premier League of Darts. His price has never risen above 2.00. Should he beat Anderson then there are few who expect him not to claim the title in the best-of-21-legs final. Wright is his main challenger and 5.00 to win the title, with Taylor out at 11.00 to be crowned champion. If you’re chasing the odds then Wright is the best bet.
