European darts open betting: Bet on fourth Van Gerwen title

June 28, 2017

The 2017 European Darts Open gets underway in Leverkusen this Thursday and Michael van Gerwen remains the man to beat.

Last week Van Gerwen claimed his third European title of the season.

The Dutchman is in top form as the PDC tour swings into its summer season.

And UniBet darts betting fans can't see anyone but Van Gerwen winning this week.

Bet on Michael van Gerwen

Van Gerwen beat Michael Smith 6-5 in the Austrian Darts Open final last week and can now go three titles in a row.

Once again, Peter Wright and Mensur Suljovic will be his main challengers in Leverkusen.

Van Gerwen is beating opponents thanks to his utter consistency with three darts. His ability to slash his score into a finishing position is frightening.

Most opponents can win a few of their legs against Van Gerwen but will ultimately slip up. He is favourite to win the European Darts Open.

Outside of Van Gerwen, it is a good bet to have Wright and Suljovic (in the same half of the draw) meet in the semifinals.

Both men are a cut above the rest of the field but frustratingly rarely match Van Gerwen for consistency in a final.

Yet Wright has beaten the Dutchman twice in European finals this season, so the second seed is a good price to win the European Darts Open.

Elsewhere, Daryl Gurney had an excellent Austrian Open and could impress here. However, the draw has not been kind to the Northern Irishman, who must get past fifth seed Michael Smith and fourth seed Simon Whitlock if he wants to reach the latter stages.

Germany's Martin Schindler is expected to take part. And so he should after his impressive run to the Austrian Open quarterfinals. If he does play then follow his matches closely.

But in reality this is Van Gerwen's title to lose and while the odds are slim on the Dutchman he is still worth backing.
