Nicolai Jørgensen leads the Eredivisie goalscorer charts with eight goals this season. But is he the best striker in the Dutch league?
There are plenty of assets that go into making a good striker. They must be both fast and strong, be able to hold the ball up well but also confident to play alone. They must have belief in their teammates to pick out passes no one else would even dream of. And, of course, they must score goals.
Sharp shooting is critical in Europe’s top leagues and Holland is no different. Last season 912 goals were scored in the league stage of the Eredivisie. That’s roughly three goals per game. There are plenty of opportunities to score.
Jorgensen may be top scorer so far this season but Feyenoord are working harder than other teams to make sure he finds the net. Just 45% (19 of 42) of Jørgensen’s shots hit the target.
Compare that to Ajax’s Kasper Dolberg and Twente’s Enes Ünal. Both have eight goals and hit the target more often than Jørgensen (55% for Dolberg and 67% for Ünal). Were it not for Feyenoord’s overall dominance then Jørgensen may not be where he is right now.
Feyenoord fans could counter this by pointing out that Jørgensen also has four assists, while the others only have two apiece. So, is the Denmark international a more rounded striker? He certainly has no problem distributing the ball to set up teammates.
Eredivisie best bets for Round 14
The league’s top goalscorers could all find the net this weekend. On Sunday Jørgensen’s Feyenoord travel to a Utrecht side that likes to keep things tight. They’ve scored 19 and conceded 19 this season, making them tough to bet on. But Feyenoord are on fire up front with 31 goals this season and if anyone can break down Utrecht it is this attacking unit.
Jørgensen is a good bet to score first in Utrecht and maintain Feyenoord’s push for the title.
Dolberg, meanwhile, will seek to add to his hat-trick scored in Ajax 5-0 thumping of NEC when the Lancieri face Heerenveen on Sunday. Ajax have a good record against Heerenveen — they’ve won their last five meetings. And while this is Dolberg’s first career game against Heerenveen he certainly shouldn’t be fazed. Ajax have not lost when Dolberg has scored in the league or Europe this season and are 1.76 to win here.
As for Ünal, the 19-year-old is blossoming in the Dutch league. His loan spell from Manchester City appears to have paid off and he’s scoring every other week for Twente. Like Dolberg, when Ünal scores Twente haven’t lost. They play a wounded NEC on Saturday, whose defence is ripe for exploitation.
Ünal has all the attributes of a great striker in the future. Six of his eight goals have come from his stronger right foot but none of them within the six-yard box. That tells of a confident striker who is willing to take pop shots whenever he can. Twente are are good 2.45 price to beat NEC.
