Michael van Gerwen is back for the Dutch Darts Masters after missing a few weeks of the tour for the birth of his baby — and darts betting fans are backing him to go all the way in Maastricht.
The world No 1 returns to the oche and is immediately placed as top seed for his home tournament. Van Gerwen is 1.73 to win the Dutch Darts Masters.
This is the ninth leg of the European Tour of Van Gerwen has already won three of those encounters. He is favourite to win the Dutch Darts Masters and a good bet to do so!
Bet on Michael van Gerwen
Why should you bet on Michael van Gerwen? That answer is simple: he is a class above the rest. Phil Taylor has proven capable of winning titles at 58 but Van Gerwen has the concentration levels and consistency — not to mention the talent! — to keep winning trophies all year round.
Van Gerwen won the Dutch Darts Masters in 2014, 2015 and 2016. He is defending champion and should do the business in Maastricht. However, there are a couple of concerns regarding the Dutchman.
The first is that he’s been away for weeks awaiting the birth of his child. He may therefore be a bit rusty when returning to the oche. The second is that Van Gerwen has suffered the very occasional early exit from tournaments this year. And although he is not likely to crash out of the first round, it’s worth checking the odds when the draw is made!
Bet on the Dutch Darts Masters
Other contenders to win the Dutch Darts Masters are Peter Wright and Mensur Suljovic. Wright is enduring a mixed season. He is persistently in the top three seeds for tournaments but converting that into victories has proved tough. He reached the Melbourne Masters final and crashed out of the Perth Masters in the quarters earlier this month.
Wright is back from the PDC’s tournaments Down Under and while Gary Anderson and Phil Taylor take time off he is pushing hard to scrape up titles. These European Tour tournaments are where he’s performed best on the circuit in 2017.
As second seed Wright would not meet Van Gerwen until the final, which is a boost for the Scot, and Kim Huybrechts is probably his toughest opponent until the semi-finals.
Bet on Peter Wright to win the Dutch Darts Masters at 6.00 and you’ve a strong chance of a hefty payout. He has won four of the eight European Tour titles so far this season, beating Michael van Gerwen in the final 6-3 and 6-0 in Hildesheim and Sindelfingen respectively.
As for Suljovic, the Austrian remains a competitive European Tour player and has reached two finals this year. It’s worth tracking his progress — especially if Wright falls in an early round — and back him when live betting on darts. As an outright winner Suljovic is 19.00 in Holland and that price will only fall the further he progresses in this tournament.
Darts betting underdogs
There are a couple of underdogs worth considering for the Dutch Darts Masters. One is Kyle Anderson, the up-and-coming Australian who won the Auckland Masters earlier this summer. Anderson is a sharp player and keen to perform on the biggest stages. He is 29.00 to win this tournament
Another underdog worth keeping an eye on is Daryl Gurney. The Northern Irishman reached the Dutch Darts Masters final last season, losing 6-2 to Van Gerwen. Recent semi-final places at the Melbourne Masters and Perth Masters also show a man in good form. He is 21.00 to win in Maastricht.
