Bet on Eredivisie — Battle for third behind Ajax

November 2, 2017

Eredivisie betting is a tricky business when one or two teams produce surprise results.

Ajax and Eindhoven are of course leading the division and you shouldn’t expect any of the other teams to catch them — even defending champions Feyenoord, who are already out of the title race.

But the battle for third place in the Eredivisie and a valuable European spot is hotting up massively. And the teams trying to secure those heady heights are not who you’d expect.

Zwolle and Vitesse are not sides that live long in the memory of football betting experts. Zwolle in particular have struggled in recent seasons to get above the midway mark in the Eredivisie table. And Vitesse are known more now as a Chelsea breeding ground than anything else.

But both sides have enjoyed plenty of success on the pitch this season and deserve to be third and fifth respectively. Zwolle in fact could leapfrog Ajax this weekend! To do that they must beat Vitesse… a task they’ve proved they can meet this season already.

Bet on Vitesse vs Zwolle

Let’s start with the hosts. Vitesse signed 10 players in the summer, five of which were on loan. Three of those loanees are Chelsea academy products in Matt Miazga, Mason Mount and Charlie Colkett. Combined they have played almost every game of Vitesse’s season so far, while summer signings Thulani Serero from Ajax and Thomas Bruns from Heracles have also impressed.

Vitesse have a young, exciting squad on their hands and the results have been promising. Even though they’ve struggled in the Europa League they have do well on the domestic front. Eighteen points from 10 games (including five wins) isn’t bad form for a side forced to play Thursday night football every other week. The Europa League is draining but Vitesse has made it work.

As for Zwolle, they have no European commitments and have lost only once all season. That was a 3-0 defeat at Ajax, which is by no means unexpected. Zwolle have scored multiple goals in all six of their victories this season. They have the joint-second best defence in the Eredivisie (10 goals conceded in 10 games) and can scrap out a draw away from home when required.

Considering Zwolle’s defensive record and their draws away from home, betting on football for a draw at 29/10 is a fair tip. Both teams to score at 11/20 should also come through.

Elsewhere in the Eredivisie, Ajax host a Utrecht side in disarray. The visitors on Sunday have won just one game in six (W1 D2 L3) and were recently thumped 7-1 by Eindhoven. Last weekend’s 2-2 draw with NAC went as expected. Utrecht took the lead but couldn’t hang on and eventually had to battle to rescue a point. Ajax are a safe bet to win here at 1/4.

Eindhoven play Twente in what is surely another dead cert on the football betting markets. Twente’s form reads WLWLWL, having started the season with four straight defeats. Their 3-1 home loss to Excelsior last weekend was mocked by many Dutch football fans. The crisis is likely to continue against table-toppers Eindhoven, who are 1/6 to win.

Towards the bottom, Venlo will hope to stem their three-game losing streak with a win over NAC. However, NAC will be buoyed from their 2-2 draw at Utrecht which ended their run of three consecutive defeats. Away to Venlo they will hope to tighten up and pinch another point, which could play into the hosts’ hands. Venlo will be expected to come forward and should end their two-match goal drought. The likelihood is, however, that they will also leak at least one. Both teams to score at 3/4 is worth considering.
