The 2017 German Darts Masters gets underway this week and darts betting fans are all over this tournament for one reason: Michael van Gerwen.
In a novel twist, Van Gerwen is NOT the first seed heading into a PDC event. It’s such a rarity these days but the Dutchman has been toppled by Scot Gary Anderson.
And it means we could have a spectacular Van Gerwen vs Phil Taylor semi-final in Dusseldorf this weekend.
Van Gerwen remains favourite to win the tournament but Taylor’s inclusion and the return of Anderson makes this a tough contest. The PDC’s big boys are all loosing up their arms, getting ready for the Unibet European Championship and the World Championship.
The German Darts Masters could be one of the most dramatic tournament on the 2017 circuit, so let’s take a look at the best darts bets.
Bet on Michael van Gerwen
Van Gerwen heads into the German Darts Masters having just won the European Darts Trophy. The Dutchman is in good form although darts odds checkers may want to look twice before backing him to win the German Darts Masters at 4/6. For Van Gerwen may be the stellar draw but his performances of late have been unsteady.
He was on a four-tournament losing streak before the European Darts Trophy triumph. That may not sound too bad but with Van Gerwen’s odds so slim you want more of a guarantee he’ll get the results!
Earlier this month Van Gerwen limped out of the Unibet World Grand Prix in the first round after a loss to Ian Henderson. He plays Martin Schindler first up at the German Darts Masters, a player with whom he has a W2 L0 record over but who is still a relative unknown compared to Van Gerwen.
Bet on Phil Taylor
Away from Van Gerwen, Taylor is probably your best bet to win the German Darts Masters. ‘The Power’ remains a force in darts even though he is semi-retired. Having breaks between major tournaments gives him the chance to properly rest up and Taylor will have his eye on the prize this weekend.
The Englishman already boasts one World Series of Darts trophy this year — the Melbourne Masters. He beat Peter Wright 11-8 in the final and could face the Scot again at the end of the German Darts Masters if all goes to plan.
Taylor is 9/1 to win the German Darts Masters, which is a great price.
Bet on the German Darts Masters
Elsewhere in the German Darts Masters, No 1 seed Anderson is worth looking at. He is 6/1 to win this tournament, which is an astonishing price and shows just how much confidence darts betting fans have inn Van Gerwen. Anderson has reached the final of his last two tournaments, winning the Perth Masters and losing the Unibet Champions League of Darts final.
Anderson has already beaten Van Gerwen in a World Series of Darts final this year (Dubai Masters, 11-7) and he’s in the opposite side of the draw to the Dutchman and Taylor.
Meanwhile, if you’re seeking a real outsider then Mensur Suljovic (16/1) or Kyle Anderson (40/1) may be the way to go. Suljovic reached the Unibet World Grand Prix semi-final earlier this month and remains a top performer when the PDC circuit heads to Germany and the rest of the continent.
Kyle Anderson, meanwhile, is collecting the match wins after clinching the Auckland Masters title back in August. The Australian has been doing the rounds in Europe all year, with varying success. His best performances have been on the World Series of Darts oches, of which the German Darts Masters is one. He faces Suljovic first up and is 6/4 to surprise the Austrian.
