Michael van Gerwen is the heavy favourite to win the Austrian Darts Open this week — but darts betting fans can pick up great odds on other players in the field!
Van Gerwen is top seed for the Austrian Darts Open and favourite to win at 1.53. Those odds are frighteningly slim and show just how much darts betting punters are siding with the Dutchman.
But he can be beaten. So far he has only won two of the six European Tour competitions in 2017. Can he be defeated again? Let's take a look at the best darts betting tips…
Bet on Michael van Gerwen
Van Gerwen heads into this tournament having won the European Darts Matchplay in Hamburg on 11 June. He ousted European Tour expert Mensur Suljovic 6-3 in an entertaining final. But it was a pretty routine path for Van Gerwen, who only dropped 15 legs through the entire competition.
Van Gerwen does have his weaknesses and his opponents will be looking for those to exploit. His last European Tour defeat was a 6-0 loss to Peter Wright in the European Darts Grands Prix final. He also lost to Wright in the German Darts Championship final, while he was downed 6-1 by Ian White in the German Darts Open.
If Van Gerwen is to lose, therefore, it is likely to be a shock. The chances of him winning tight games are great. But if he has a stinker then an opponent can take him down. Therefore, either bet on Van Gerwen to win the Austrian Darts Open or bet on his opponents to take him down 6-1 or 6-2. The odds will be good and that is more likely that a toe-to-toe battle down the other man’s way.
Bet on the Austrian Darts Open
Outside of Van Gerwen, Wright is the obvious choice to back to win this tournament. He is second seed and 5.00 to win. His biggest threat is Suljovic, who is third seed in Vienna. The likelihood is that these men will reach the semi-finals and face each other. So betting on both men to win (Suljovic is 17.00) is not a bad shout. At least you’ll likely have heavy odds in the bank heading into the final.
Outside of these three men, only Benito van de Pas and Jelle Klaasen have actually reached a European Tour final this year. That shows the dominance of Wright, Van Gerwen and Suljovic, and why you should stick with those guys this weekend.
